What's the Big Deal About Broadband Internet Access?

Have you thought about signing up for broadband Internet access?

Have you thought about signing up for broadband Internet access? If so, you are on the right track, as broadband Internet access is quickly becoming the preferred choice of Internet service in homes throughout the nation.

Broadband Internet access is high-speed Internet access, which the FCC defines as the transmission of data at a rate of over 200 kilobits per second.

Difference Between Dial-Up and Broadband

Dial-up is the traditional way of getting on the Internet. To get on the Internet via a dial-up connection, your computer is hooked up to your phone line and you dial a number in order to access the Internet.

Broadband Internet access, on the other hand, provides a faster data transmission speed to users. A broadband Internet access line such as DSL or cable modem can send and receive more data than a regular dial-up line.

Currently, broadband Internet access is the highest quality of Internet services, and that is substantial with what all those people are trying to do at present with their Internet connections. With broadband Internet access, you can experience streaming video, VoIP, games and other rich multimedia features.

Unlike dial-up access, you are always online with broadband Internet access. Your phone line is not tied up when you have broadband Internet access. As soon as you turn on your computer, you're ready to surf. With broadband Internet access, you can quickly access web pages and finish downloads much faster.

Broadband Connections Types

Digital Subscriber Line or DSL is the first type of broadband Internet access. With DSL, you access the Internet via the same line as your telephone line. However, you can simultaneously use your phone and be online with a DSL connection. Your location will determine if you qualify for DSL or not.

Cable Internet service is the second type of broadband Internet access. Using cable modems, Internet access is provided to you by an ISP. Data is transmitted through the same coaxial cable that delivers your cable TV service. Data for your cable TV and Internet may be sent and received over the same cable line, but are transmitted differently. Thus, your cable TV programming is not affected by cable Internet.

Fiber optics technology is a fairly new technology for giving broadband Internet access. Considered the fastest form of Internet access, data is sent and received as light and pass through fiberglass cables.

Wireless broadband, on the other hand, are fast becoming the preferred broadband Internet access in many homes throughout the United States. A wireless broadband connection uses a radio link between the user's end and the service provider's end. Since the reach of wireless connections is increasing, wireless broadband Internet access is becoming readily available in many places.

Satellite Internet is another broadband Internet access connection wherein Internet access is possible by linking to orbiting satellites. While satellite Internet is much slower than other types of broadband Internet access, it is still relatively much faster than dial-up.

Lastly, Broadband over Power Line or BPL sends and receives data over electrical lines with low and medium voltage. BPL is still a new technology so it is still not common.

Whichever type of broadband Internet access you choose, you will experience a whole new way of using the Internet. One day with broadband Internet access and you won't want to go back to dial-up again.
